Creating Beyond Category: Building an Independent Creative Practice Through Collaboration, Curiosity, and CommunityA career in the arts rarely follows a straight line. Through stories from curated exhibitions, freelance projects, artist collaborations, and unexpected opportunities, Ash Slemming explores how curiosity, community relationships, and a willingness to work across disciplines can become the foundation for an independent creative practice. This talk offers practical insights for emerging artists and creative thinkers exploring career options and finding their own path. Ash will share how they built a career by following a path of curiosity and aligning their goals with their personal values.Ash Slemming is an interdisciplinary creative based in Treaty 7 Southern Alberta working across exhibitions, public programming, writing, design, and community engagement. Through their independent practice, ‘Do the Art Thing’, they collaborate with artists and organizations locally and internationally to develop projects that foster curiosity, reflection, and meaningful dialogue.Always free.
